We are very lucky in New Zealand in that we can get married just about anywhere. Fashion is such now that your location doesn´t have to dictate your gown look - we love massive tulle gowns on the beach!

We are very lucky in New Zealand in that we can get married just about anywhere. Fashion is such now that your location doesn´t have to dictate your gown look - we love massive tulle gowns on the beach!

But there are still some considerations your location will bring to the process of selecting your gown. Usually the venue is the first thing that is booked by the bride and groom. By thinking about why you choose a particular venue gives us some information we can bring into the process of choosing your gown.

Beach

A lovely outdoor location which can either embody quinessential New Zealand or be an easy to organise option with a destination wedding. Many brides think chiffon when they think beach, but many other fabrics work as well. Fabrics that flow and mirror the movement of the sea include chiffon, charmeuse and tulle.

Vineyard

A mix of beautiful outdoor and then gorgeous indoors settings as well. Vineyards offer a natural setting as well as the opportunity for amazing photos in the surrounding vinyards and gardens. Typically they are very relaxing locations and can be magical for a wedding. Your gown should be something that makes you feel as confortable as your location does.

Rustic Barn

This is a really on trend location, but we know kiwi girls have been getting married on the farm for a long time. Because this gives you a blank canvas, the theme of the decorations are probably more important than the barn itself. If you are going vintage, then your gown choices will lead towards the vintage lcaes. If it is going to be a real ho down with lots of dancing, then the size of your train will probably be smaller to allow movement.

The Backyard

How lucky is the bride who has a family member with a gorgeous garden to host the wedding? Unless you are the daughter of the governor general, it is likely that your wedding will be small and intimate. So perhaps a gown that will allow freedom of movement to mix and mingle, not with a skirt to overwhelm your guests. Something lightweight and chiffon perhaps.

The Hotel Ballroom

This is a really traditional venue for a wedding, and also one of the most upscale. The gown for this venue must stand out within a large space, it can be because of the volume of the skirt, or the sparkle of the bling.

The Church

Church or Synagogue weddings can vary as much as church architecture and religion varies. Some provide amazing cathedral settings and others intimate chapels.

The names of gown trains follow the church names - as cathedral gown has a long dramatic train - if you have the space you may as well use it. A chapel train is much smaller and easier to move in. One key consideration is to discuss with the spiritual leader if there are any rules on attire. Some require arms to be covered or have rules on plunging necklines.

Mountains & Lakes

Becoming increasingly popular we love seeing the dramatic photos taken in the Remarkables or stunning shots with some of our beautiful lakes in the background.

We are so lucky in New Zealand to have the most amazing backdrops.

If this is your choice, make sure your gown is equally amazing or dramatic. Some of these scenes are huge and you don't want to be lost in the images.
