Gown Silhouettes

A guide to finding the best gown for your shape.

A guide to finding the best gown for your shape.

As a very rough guide to getting started on your gown search we talk about body shape. Grab a tape measure and take a look in the mirror.

Nothing is a substitute to trying wedding gowns on (they truly are a unique garment) but at least this gives you some pointers to think about.

Full A Line or Ballgown

This is a shape that has a large skirt. It might be gathered off a waist seam, as in a traditional ballgown, or it tapers off the waist to a wide a line skirt. Queen Victoria started the ballgown trend, and you don't need to be a queen to wear one, you might just have a touch of the princess about you!

Small A-line

A true a-line has no defined waistline, it fits the torso and then flares at the waist with the effect of elongating the body. But for our purposes it means a skirt that flares out but not wide, just enough. the skirt comes off the hips so there is no tightness on the thighs or lower part of the body. A great understated look.

Modified a-line

Is it a-line is it mermaid? Not it's a cross between the two. This unromantic name refers to a fabulous gown shape. Tight to the top of the thighs, or just below the hip and then flaring out. You get the sexy tightness over your bum but then flaring out so that is can be very flattering. A great shape if you are shorter.

Fit and Flare

The fit and flare, or mermaid gown is one that hugs the whole body. Only flaring out at the bottom so that you can physically walk! This silhouette is for the bride who wants to show all her curves and be sexy on her wedding day.
